BSL Weekly Update
current as of May 30, 2007

***45 events across the country have been confirmed for Pit Bull Awareness Day 2007...Please join us in celebrating responsiBULL ownership***

BSL Passed

Jacksonville, Arkansas

Sikeston, Missouri**

**Passed in mid-April, but just brought to my attention now.   The ordinance defines dangerous dogs by breed, including pit bulls, but also includes dogs having a history of biting hard enough to break the skin.

We CANNOT stress enough the importance of ALWAYS
maintaining polite and respectful communication with
officials.  Our dogs are worth keeping our emotions in check
in order to work with officials to a solution that benefits
the entire community.  For letter writing tips, please click here.

Update April 6, 2007
The city has proposed an amendment to Chapter 23.18(c)(2) of the municipal code.  The only response I received was the proposed ordinance, so I don't know if any other changes are pending.

City Council meets in Council Chambers, 4th floor, City Hall, on Wednesdays at 6:00 PM.

Update April 14, 2007
According to city administrator, Wendy Gabriel, the request to ban pit bulls is being taken seriously and the current ordinance is under review.  PLEASE, PLEASE CONTINUE TO WRITE TO THE CITY OFFICIALS!!

Original Alert:  VICIOUS DOGS:  A resident's cat was allegedly killed by 2 pit bulls.  After her cat’s death, she went on the internet and found that pit bulls are the #1 biters and murderers of all the dog breeds. Twenty people a year are killed by dogs. She is hoping that the ordinance can be changed to prevent pit bulls within the city limits.  She encouraged the city to pass "Thomas’ Law" named after her cat.

Wendy Gabriel, city administrator, said the city will consider Elmore's request, and as part of the process look at Denver, which has banned pit bulls.
